Tirana(Durres), Albania … yes, in the Balkans with GHNI/TCD !

Tirana(Duress), Albania greetings!

1987’s Summer, I was on 2-month youth(ful) “wild-hair” trip through Eastern Europe, gazing from Macedonia across Lake Ohrid, at what was then described as one of THE most closed and oppressive countries in Eastern Europe and the world, Albania! Yesterday’s conversation with my Albanian friend(Agron), who was 12 years old in ’87, confirmed the brutal iron grip of the communists here in his youth. Today it’s very hard to believe I’m actually back in this region of the world and especially Europe.

The past few days have been phenomenal, as those committed to self-sustainable approaches to development via TCD, have participated together in training and helping villages in Albania develop out and expand their work in the poorest of the poor villages among gypsies(Roma).

It is such a privilege to present to you our newest endeavors in this Balkan region of Europe. As always, GHNI is helping the poorest of the poor and severely marginalized. Already, they are asking GHNI (and me) to be back in the region ASAP(within 90 days), equipping local leadership focused in gypsy villages in southern Serbia.

GHNI is committed to the work of self-sustainability among the poorest of the poor, regardless of location and culture. So while all my personal work and updates to date have been in South Asia, we go where greatest needs are. Sponsors on specific endeavors and projects are so encouraging. Jatapara, India is a long way from Hilton Hotel, Hawaii. Yet a “connection” was made relationally between the two, as Hilton chose to sponsor a new well in this village.

Manu(our GHNI staff in Jatapara) is currently leading the way as he mentors into this village, TCD, the “knowledge transfer” so important in any self-sustaining endeavor. We are grateful for he and Babujan, who have successfully completed one year of TCD in 4 villages in their areas.

Additionally, due to such successes as these, Hilton is offering to initiate a “River Water Lifting Project” that will allow a vast increase in crop production during the dry seasons.

We in GHNI are so thankful to you our financial backers, who have allowed us to partake of so many good accomplishments in 2014! Too many to list would be an understatement, as you have allowed us to work and develop in all five areas(Water, Food, Health, Income Generation, and Education) in Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Wrapping up my time in Dhangadhi, Nepal after our GHNI anti-Human Trafficking Conference, I was able to visit and assess three well sites we(actually you!) have been sponsoring and re-equipping. Each well has it’s own unique history. One was being newly established. While another was already long-term and pumping clean quality water for much-needed irrigation of rice and other crops. And yet another was in the process (literally, while we were there) of being changed over from a high-maintenance/high-energy consumption diesel pump … to an extremely low-maintenance/highly efficient electric pump. All you-GHNI sponsored!

It’s difficult to put into words all the help and benefits provided in each of these well installations and upgrades. Allow your imagination some entertainment in a few of these listed below. Kathmandu & Nepal …

Me being re-assigned to now work in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka (and India), will mean more GHNI activity blogs from these countries and others as we begin work in them. Our newest GHNI staff member is Nepalese and I so look forward to working with him in Nepal. Ironically, Kiran Karki only a few days ago sent this e-mail to me, explaining some of the flooding situations in Nepal and even near his home in Kathmandu. Following is his e-mail:

Dear All,
In August, Nepal has faced heavy rains which brought flooding and landslides in the many parts of the country. Many people lost their lives and many are displaced. A big section of the Arniko Highway joining Nepal and China was washed away, and the lake is inundating settlements, farms and bridges. As word spread, there is panic in some areas as people fled to higher ground.
The landslide site is 1km upstream from the intake structure of the Sun Kosi Power House at Dolalghat, and downstream from the Bhote Kosi Hydroelectric Project. Many people have been lost and many houses were swept away by the recent flood in Darchula district and other districts in far-western Nepal due to the flood in Mahakali, Seti, and Karnali rivers. Other villages have also been affected due to the flood. Rescue effort have been affected as well due to the high level of water.
