This month we are excited seeing fruit of our labour. Two months back, me and some villagers had planted wheat paddy, now it’s grown big and ready to become a model of the second cropping. Because of the less water, people didn’t want to risk their capital on second cropping, but we successfully showed them that; from the nearby seasonal river, we can get enough water to cultivate our farms. We blocked the river with mud and stones and made a small dam. Water on this dam is sufficient enough to fulfill the need of our farms. We are hoping that next time more other villagers will get involve with us for the second cropping. It’s very hard to convince people for something which they are not used to. Making them do second cropping has always been a great challenge for us.

We have started new group in a place called ‘camp’. There mostly people are migrated from Bangladesh. I have given them the lesson on relief and development with the story of river crossing. They are very enthusiastic to learn themselves and agreed to teach others as well. The people in the camp are living in very congested area, many houses has even no drain to pass the wastage water of their house. There is no drainage facility available. People are suffering from diseases. So I have decided to do the TCD lessons with them to have development in their community.

Computer center is also going on well. The kids are now learning school course. We have kids from different classes such as grade 3rd to university level.  Such as one young girl name Priyanka H., she is very interested in learning computer, though I wrote about her before. Her father is a carpenter and mother is a maid servant. Priyanka is learning computer since one year with our center. She did very well in her computer subject in the school.

These are but a few of the reports I have received monthly from our TCD ventures in India.  Thanks to you, we are able to move forward in many other villages and in many other venues of TCD!  Thank you!!!  Daniel

Sujo … One COURAGEOUS Young Lady In Bangladesh !!!

Sujo in her new garden
Sujo in her new garden

Sujo   (edited only slightly from Oct.’16 report received from Bangladesh) …

(name adjusted to protect her) age 15, in class 10 faced a BIGGEST challenge in her life. After her class as she came back to her home she found many unknown guests …  all of them were waiting for her!  She thought they might be relatives. Surprisingly she found that they came to see her to choose her as bride for one of their sons.  She knows what it means and she knows suffering is waiting for her. She took initiative with mighty courage that her family were astonished. She said, “If I am even killed I will not marry. I will study and make a career to help my parents. I will not allow anyone to destroy my dream. If anyone dare to do so has to kill me first”.   Parents said that they unable to bare her education expenses.  She said I will manage my own. She urged please don’t force me to merry. Parent could not change her mind so visitors left.

She came back to her group and shared her problem. Everyone gave her courage and Kari(TCD/GHNI mentor) asked her what she loves to do?  She loves gardening. And beside her homestead there is a fallow land. She with her group mates clean the land and prepare the land for gardening. She knew this is her only chance to save her dream.   She work every day after class. Within a week of her labor she planted gourd in her garden. It was complete madness to the villagers to see a girl working for her marriage(NON!)!  “She will get married and cook for her husband family that what she was born for according to the village leader.”(said villagers)   She ignored all criticism and worked hard. Besides working in garden she is now giving more time to her mother to assist her in domestic work.

Surprising everyone within 2 month her garden was full of flower!   Every flower was a part of fulfilling her dream. She told her group, “If we work hard, a way will be shown to us to overcome any problem of life”.  She is selling every other day gourd from her garden. Now it is source of income of her education and source of nutrition of her family. “TCD group has saved my life, by introducing life and hope into my life.   Still she is studying and encouraging other member of her group.

Balkans of Serbia & Albania New TCD …

Village Farming Woman-Albania
Village Farming Woman-Albania

New territory always excites me in GHNI endeavors. The Balkans of Serbia and Albania seem far removed from other impoverished areas GHNI works in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Yet we all must come to the realization that the same extreme poverty exists in large swaths of Europe equally. It especially exists anywhere there is isolation and abandonment. GHNI is committed to helping the poorest of the poor, regardless of geographics.
