TIRUPUR, ARCOT BORE WELL project by the GHNI:

People those who lived in Ammapalayam, Tirupur went through much scarcity of water and also lot of physical and mental hardship.  In Tirupur our team had campaign against suicides, through which we reached thousands of people.  This area in India records highest suicide rate.  With the help of GHNI we dig a bore well in one of the village, around 400 people benefited out of this.

Another bore well was drilled in the same way in Arcot, near Vellore.  This bore well benefited around 200 people.  Through these bore wells in these 2 places hundreds of people got enough drinking water.

More than 200 families in this village, but there is water scarcity .  GHNI helped us to make 300 feet bore well with the expense of Rs.90,000/-.  The bore well was dedicated by our National leaders Mrs. Annie, Mrs. Neena.

Another bore well is digging now in Gummudipundi area on the way to Andhra from Chennai. This will complete it works next week. This is the place where Dan visited and heard the story of a poor widow.

Tirupur, India is in many ways hostage to its own success.  A major clothing and garment manufacturing center of India, tens of thousands remain without basic needs such as clean water.  These are subjugated to “system” of slavery intrinsic to this industry that pays $4-$7 dollars per week, depending on whether you are a women/man and where one is in the processes of this type of manufacturing.  Most in the West would call it “slave labor”.  GHNI is now(7/’12) in the process of digging its first well in this neediest of locations.  This water is available for not only home domestic needs, but will also be available for irrigation purposes also needed in these families for crops cultivation.  Dan was there at the end of 2011 and personally witnessed these families in dire need of clean water.

Goats-For-India are as intricate to GHNI’s TCD plan as it gets!  When it comes to micro-enterprise initiatives, goats rank high.

India has about 20 breeds of goats and they are raised primarily for milk and meat.  Choosing a “best” breed for a given village cluster location isn’t always easy.  There is always the local goat market, usually held each Friday near a fairly major town center.  Two of the better breeds sought out are:

*   Jamnapari is one of the largest goats in India; it has been extensively utilized to upgrade indigenous breeds for meat and milk, and has been taken to  near by countries for the same purpose.

*   Beetel is a good dairy breed, second to Jamnapari in size but is superior to it in that it is more prolific and more easily adaptable to different agro-ecological conditions and to stall-feeding.

But these specific breeds tend to be expensive and it can get cumbersome to raise such breeds with their needs for more expensive vaccinations, etc..  So as we work with local village leaders, it is important that we listen well to their input and make plans with their “embracement” of any TCD initiatives.  From that base, there is a much higher success to any micro-enterprise goat business.

200 women came walking through the breezeway at 10:00am into an old building in Kolkata(Calcutta), India.  During the time just before their day of work at the clothing center, it came in a strong grip to me … these women were actually “saved”, saved from the slavery of the sex trade industry.  Photography and interviews were forbidden due to all types of risks to these women and those helping them.  We were however allowed to speak openly with the leadership, in this one of seven organizations we the GHNI team investigated for our TCD work in the “source” villages these women came from.  Words cannot describe how sobering it was.  Most trickery and deception comes when the girls are hardly or not at all in puberty.  Within a ½-mile radius of our location, there were 20,000 women in prostitution, with 40,000 clients each night.  The 200 women in front of us seemed so few in comparison.
